Source Filmmaker (abbreviated as SFM) is a video capture and editing application that works from inside the Source game engine. The tool, created by Valve Corporation, was used to create over 50 animated shorts for its Source games, including Team Fortress 2, the Left 4 Dead series, and Half-Life 2. On June 27, 2012, Valve released a free open beta version of the SFM to the gaming community via its Steam service.

Source Filmmaker was originally only available to Valve's video making team, however, a version of the developer's SFM was leaked, and people such as Jimbobc and the Unterganger SuperMarioGalaxy13 started making videos with it. However, it reportedly required an Autodesk Maya plugin in order to work, and without it functioning correctly, SFM was unusable.

Eventually a public version was released, but it was not the developer version, and did not automatically have every asset from the latest Team Fortress 2 updates. The public version came with the production file for Meet the Heavy, and the files for Meet the Soldier and Meet the Engineer were released later on, however, no further "Meet the Team" videos have been released for editing, though fan-made maps have been created in their place.

Use by Untergangers[]

There is a Breen reskin available that should work with SFM [1]. The sniper elite version is only available on the gmod workshop. Alternatively, you can use stand-in characters such as The Medic. The Team Captain hat, based on M. Bison's hat is also a viable item for use in downfall parodies.

Like Garry's Mod, most of the videos take place in an intelligence room of one of the bases of 2fort.

While Untergangers do not often use SFM, a few SourceFilmmakers and other YouTubers have made Downfall parodies, usually with reskins of The Medic or just the normal skin of The Medic. SFM animator Mister Mad in particular has raised the bar, having 8 characters re-skinned in high quality from TF2 classes.
