John Rouse Merriott Chard (1847-1897) was an officer in the British army. He is best remembered for his leadership during the defence at the battle of Rorke's Drift, in which he successfully managed to defend an outpost occupied by 100 British soldiers (many of whom were already sick or wounded) against an invading army of thousands of warriors of the Zulu tribe. He later won the Victoria Cross for this act of courage.

After the battle, Chard went through a series of promotions, first to Captain and then to Brevet Major. He was finally promoted to Colonel in 1897 before he died from cancer in the tounge.

In the Parodies

John Chard appeared in several of HitchcockJohn's parodies.

Like many other historical figures in the Parody Universe, such as Felicity Merriman, Leonidas I, and Mikhail Tukhachevsky, Chard was still alive in 1945. He served in a British regiment of the United Alliance of Bush's Fans, where he fought in Africa against the Neo-United Bieber Fever Alliance-supported Zulu tribe. His leadership in defending Rorke's Drift against the Zulu warriors was also the turning point in the war, when the UABF finally started to gain the upper hand against the UBFA.

The scenes used in the parodies are from the 1964 movie Zulu.
