Paris is the capital and biggest city in of France, It is located on the river Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region. According to the results of the 2009 Census, Its population is 2,234,105.
During World War II, Paris was captured by Nazi Germany in 1940, splitting France into a northern, Nazi occupied territory and an independent new French government on the southern portion. Paris, along with northern France was liberated by the Allied forces in 1944. The city suffered relatively little damage as it was declared an open city during the war.
